Julie DiCaro on women in sports media and dealing with social media abuse

Writer and broadcaster Julie DiCaro of 670 The Score in Chicago joined Downtown on Tuesday afternoon to talk about her recent piece for SI.com on the challenges faced by women in sports media. She detailed the abuse she consistently receives from anonymous users on Twitter that resulted in her taking some time off when she received threats in the wake of her reporting on the Patrick Kane rape case. DiCaro shared her experiences and those of other women in the field who have dealt with the same level of vitriol in social media. She said that this whole ordeal has not impacted her love of the job but it has made it less enjoyable to cover and follow the Blackhawks this season. DiCaro told Rich Kimball she believes there is “an educational divide” that separates the angry, over-the-top fan from those who simply support their teams.
